Yusif Mirzayev

(1958-1993)

Yusif Ali oghlu Mirzayev was born on 23 May 1958 in the village of Boyukduz, Babek District.
He completed his secondary education in 1975 at School No. 1 named after I.Safarli.
He pursued higher education at the Azerbaijan Institute of National Economy named after Dadash Bunyadzade (present-day UNEC).
In 1988, he became actively involved in the National Movement. In 1991, he voluntarily departed for the frontline and demonstrated exceptional bravery in the Goranboy and Aghdara operational directions.
Together with his 14-member detachment, he participated in all assigned military operations and played an instrumental role in the liberation of 17 villages in the Aghdara region. In one of the combat engagements, he successfully extricated an encircled unit without casualties.
On 19 February 1993, during unequal and intense fighting in Aghdara, he was killed heroically while attempting to evacuate his comrades from encirclement.
He was laid to rest in the Alley of Martyrs in the city of Nakhchivan.
A secondary school in Nakhchivan city, as well as Secondary School No. 44 in Baku, has been named in his honour, and a commemorative bust has been erected in front of the school.
By Decree No. 495 of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated 27 March 1993, Yusif Vali oghlu Mirzayev was posthumously awarded the title “National Hero of Azerbaijan.”
He was also conferred the “Golden Star” Medal.
He was married and had one child.
